The Verse Novel Shelf

ShelvesAI policy

AI policy

Every book on this shelf is written and illustrated by people. Here's how we keep it that way, and where we do use AI behind the scenes.

What goes on the shelf

The shelf is for books written and illustrated by people. We don't add a book if any of its text, cover or illustrations was generated by AI.

Authors using tools for spelling, grammar or research is fine. This follows the Authors Guild's Human Authored standard.

How we check

We add books from established US and Canadian publishers, not self-published books. A few books that joined the shelf before these rules were set stay on it. For recent books, we also look for publisher disclosures and news reports.

Where we use AI

We use AI tools behind the scenes to run the shelf:

  • searching publisher catalogs, award lists and reviews for novels in verse
  • gathering each book's details, such as publisher, dates, awards and covers
  • drafting synopses from publishers' descriptions and other public sources
  • tagging themes and moods for the filters
  • building this website and its graphics

We review the results, and every book is checked against publisher and library sources.

We do our best, but it isn't perfect.

We can't always know how a book was made. If you see something, let us know on Bluesky. We'll look into it and remove any book that doesn't meet this standard.
